During my time at UC Berkeley's student-run newspaper The Daily Californian (Aug 2017 – Aug 2019), I had the pleasure of working with many talented student designers and writers who taught me so much about design, as well as working with a large team.
I initially joined as a layout designer, but eventually expanded into the roles of infographic artist and illustrator as well, as I was hungry to learn more and contribute as much as I could to the paper.
Infographics
As an infographic designer, I communicated information and statistics in a visually appealing way, while adhering to specific style guides and color palettes. I worked closely with writers to make sure information was conveyed correctly, often completing the final version within a 36-hour turnaround.

Illustrations
As an illustrator, I used Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to create illustrations to accompany articles. I worked closely with writers to make sure the style and content matched the article, often completing the final version within a 36-hour turnaround. Layouts
As the Assistant Design Editor in Fall 2018, I was responsible for designing the visual elements and headlines for many of our special print issues. Other layout designers, credited on the covers, often assisted in the page-to-page layouts. I worked with color palettes created by the design team, and I aimed to create designs that are legible and fun, while evoking the theme of the special issue.
Study Abroad 2018
The 2017 study abroad special issue featured design elements with small airplanes and dotted lines, so for 2018 I decided to evoke passports in the visual design elements, with rounded corners, stamps, and luggage tags for the bylines. Read the articles here!

Elections 2018
The 2018 midterm elections were all about encouraging people to go out and vote to make change, which is why I focused on the idea of the ballot for the design elements. I kept it simple with a box around the headline and another around the byline, meant to represent the checking of the ballot. Read the articles here!

Year in Retrospect 2018
For this special issue, I worked with Kaitlan Tseng to create the design elements, and it was the first special issue I've ever done! We used an arrow motif to represent reflecting back on the past year, as well as moving forward into the new year. For the Cal Athletics photo essay, I used large arrows to evoke action and motion. Career Fair 2018
For the career fair issue, I used rectangles and lines to represent goal-setting and productivity, like a flow chart or timeline, while simultaneously keeping things fun and exciting with an energetic color palette. Read the articles here!

Black History Month 2018
Because Black History Month is a celebration of the achievements and culture of African Americans in U.S. history, I used confetti-like geometric shapes in rich colors and complex configurations. Read the articles here!

Homecoming 2018
For this special issue, I worked with Kaitlan Tseng to design simple headlines with circular elements and banners for bylines to represent the pride and celebration of school spirit. Read the articles here!
